We are excited for your son or daughter to prepare to meet Jesus in this special sacrament! First Holy Communion is celebrated around the age of reason - at our parish, most commonly in the 3rd grade. The Eucharist is a gift that takes a lifetime to understand; it is a gift that requires a significant response from us, and this is why the Church takes care to make sure children are well prepared.
Preparation at Saint Bernadette
At your child's Baptism you, the parents, agreed that you would be the "first and best teachers of your children in the faith." Your involvement in preparation for Eucharist is crucial. The absolute best preparation for First Communion is taking your child to Mass regularly and being a living witness to the power and importance of being nourished weekly by the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
If you haven't been around in a little while, welcome back! Please check out our Mass schedule and our Eucharist page to learn more. (*Children are encouraged to attend Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass. Also, we encourage you to follow along with your kids in the Breaking Bread hymnal to help them learn the order of the Mass and proper responses.)
Our children will receive the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time in third grade. Children are prepared during their weekly group time. We utilize the Blessed First Communion Program which includes a colorful workbook and short videos. We encourage parents to sign up here to receive these lessons weekly via e-mail for reinforcement.
Parents of our 3rd grade candidates will gather on Saturday, October 5th at 9 am in the Parish Ministry Center Community Room to discuss the Sacrament and the journey of preparation.
On Sunday, October 27th, candidates for First Communion and their families are to attend the 11 am Teaching Mass where Fr. Paul will explain as he goes. Afterwards, children and parents may ask him questions.
Rehearsal will be held on Saturday, April 25th at 10 am and Monday, April 27th at 4:30 pm during the children’s regularly scheduled weekly sessions. Family Faith Formation prepared at home and any Catholic School children may attend either rehearsal.
Our children will receive the Sacrament of First Communion on Sunday, May 3rd at 9 am or 11 am Mass.
